"The Green Bay Packers have been preparing for Brett Favre's retirement the last few football seasons. Besides drafting Aaron Rodgers with a first-round draft pick, they also added Louisville standout Brian Brohm and LSU's Matt Flynn to their roster," stated Dan DelGato director of operations for LazerWager. "If Brett Favre plays this football season, it won't be with the Green Bay Packers."
The 2008-2009 NFL Season kicks off on Thursday, September 4, and the Packers have spent the entire offseason preparing former California Bear star, Aaron Rodgers, to play quarterback, psychologically closing the door on Favre's 17-year reign as offensive leader.
NFL Players Association spokesman Carl Francis said that Favre is still listed as an active player. "He never filled out any paperwork officially retiring from the NFL." If Favre is serious about returning this football season, the Packers' general manager would have the option to put Favre on the active roster, trade him, or release him.
"After seeing Brett Favre wear that number 4 jersey in Green Bay for 17 years, most football fans couldn't imagine him playing for a different NFL team, however, Joe Montana ended his career in Kansas City, Boomer Esaison went to the Jets after nine years in Cincinnati and Steve McNair played his final year with the Ravens," reminded DelGato.
"I know he has the itch to come back and play,\" Packers cornerback Al Harris told ESPN\'s \"NFL Live.\" Harris said, \"If he will or not, I don\'t know.\" Brett Favre might have the itch to play football again, but the Packers don't have the itch to sign him. The biggest question isn't if he wants to play. The question is, "where will Brett Favre play?"
While most sports journalist and radio hosts are hyping the Minnesota Vikings as Favre's next team, LazerWager suggests the Washington Redskins are the perfect fit for Favre's return this year. "Favre has too much respect for his former teammates and fans to join a rival from the NFC North. And the Packers don't want to face him two times this season," stated DelGato.
Washington's roster provides plenty of targets in Chris Cooley, Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El. All three receivers caught 50 passes or more for at least 700 yards, even with Jason Cambell and Todd Collins splitting time at the quarterback position.
Favre's aging arm would get plenty of run support from 1,000-yard-rusher Clinton Portis, who also caught 47 passes out of the backfield. With the Redskins ending last season at 9-7 with a playoff berth, the addition of Brett Favre would be enough for Washington to be a Super Bowl contender.
